"There is no independent body be allowed to try to identify behind the attack. They (the U.S.) is that the terrorists were hiding in Afghanistan and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) attacked Afghanistan," said Mahmoud.

"They said 2,000 people died in the World Trade Centre in New York but in Afghanistan, far more than 110,000 civilians were killed," said Mahmoud who doubted the militant Al-Qaeda was behind the attack in 2001.

In March, Iran's official media reported the incident Mahmoud referring to U.S. attacks on 11 September as a big lie.
